Why SKHY trades at a premium

An ADR premium usually closes because brokers can buy shares in Seoul, deposit them with the depositary bank and sell new ADSs in New York. For SKHY that route is limited: under the deposit agreement, new shares can be deposited into the ADR program only with the company’s consent and within limits it sets, so the supply of ADSs cannot easily expand to meet US demand. Many US investors also cannot buy shares on the Korea Exchange directly, which keeps demand on the US line. The depositary is Citibank; the terms are in the prospectus filed with the SEC (SEC filing).

About this data

  • Formula. Premium = SKHY close ÷ (Seoul close × 0.1 ÷ KRW per USD) − 1, using the same calendar date for all three numbers.
  • Timing. Seoul closes at 15:30 KST, about 13 hours before New York, so part of any daily gap is news that arrived in between. Days when only one market was open are left out.
  • Sources. Seoul closes from the Korea Exchange (KRX); SKHY closes and the won-dollar rate from Yahoo Finance. Prices exclude dividends. The page is refreshed when new research is published on this site.
